Case Study:

PATH’s Shigella Vaccine Public Health Value Proposition

Bagamian Sci recently contributed to PATH’s Shigella vaccine public health value proposition, which comprehensively considered the potential impact of Shigella vaccines globally and at the national stakeholder level. Shigella is a leading bacterial cause of diarrhea in children from certain low-to-middle-income countries and military and international travelers. Shigella infections are associated with downstream child growth deficits (known as #stunting) which have been linked to physical and cognitive delays and reduced adulthood productivity. Although still in the later stages of clinical development, a Shigella vaccine can potentially save lives and improve immediate and downstream child health outcomes.

As part of this project, Bagamian Sci completed the following:

  • Synthesized the available literature about the potential child growth impacts of Shigella infection and prepared a review.

  • Generated cost-effectiveness models of Shigella vaccine candidates, which included the benefits gained by reducing Shigella diarrhea and Shigella-attributable stunting (child growth).

  • Coauthored WHO Vaccine Value profiles on potential ETEC and Shigella vaccines.
