Meet our Guest, Tara Sabo-Attwood, PhD

Dr. Tara Sabo-Attwood is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental and Global Health at the University of Florida. She is also an active member of the Emerging Pathogens Institute, Center for Environmental and Human Toxicology, and the Water Institute.
 
She received a BS in genetics from UCONN in 1996 and a PhD from the University of Florida in Biomedical Sciences and Environmental Toxicology in 2003. For the past 17 years, she has led a well-funded research program that investigates the health effects of environmental pollutants.

Bridging her STEM and public health training, she is also leading efforts in waste-water epidemiology to track illicit drugs in wastewater as an indicator of community health. Her work to date has led to more than 100 publications and the mentorship of over 100 junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students. 

During her career, she has been named a Research Fellow by the National Academy of Science and has served on a number of scientific boards including the International Academy of Sciences and the national EPA Chartered Science Advisory Board. Dr. Sabo-Atwood is a current member of EPA FIFRA and is Deputy Director of the Southeastern Coastal Center for agricultural Health and Safety supported by CDC/NIOSH. She is also a Research Associate of the Smithsonian’s Global Health Program in Washington DC.
 
Dr. Sabo-Attwood has served in numerous leadership positions throughout her career including Department Chair for almost a decade. In these roles, in addition to advancements in research, teaching and outreach, she has championed workplace wellness initiatives and has been a strong supporter of women in science.
